The first pawn shops

The first pawn shops appeared in the fifteenth century in Perugia, Italy, under the name "Monte di Pietà" or "Mount of Piety." At that time, people had to fight against loan sharks and it was urgent to reduce indebtedness, fight against poverty and control all financial transactions especially money lending.

In England, pawnbroking appeared after the conquest of William the Conqueror and kept evolving. Pawnbrokers persevered despite the Usury Act of 157, which prohibited pawn shops because of scripture's teachings on usury.

Pawnbroking in America

Pawnbroking was first introduced in America back when the first settlers arrived, and it grew in a very short period of time as the main source of consumer credit. Over time, as banks lent money via loans and lines of credits, the need for pawn shops was eliminated as the main source. However, people today still use pawn shops to sell belongings for cash.

Pawnbroking is very old. It first existed to help poor people who were under the mercy of ruthless loan sharks who took advantage of them, and it still exists today because it is needed. Everyone gets stuck in uncomfortable financial situations now and then, and using pawn shops provide quick cash as an alternative to more official sources for extra money.
